The Power of Networking (When Done Right)
Mar 25, 2024Have you ever reached out to someone for help with your job search, only to be met with silence? You're not alone. Many PhDs experience frustration when networking doesn't get immediate results. But I often see that PhDs' initial outreach mistakenly starts with asking for a favor.
Networking is often misunderstood as simply reaching out to people and requesting assistance. However, it's much more than that—it's about building relationships. Imagine someone approaching you on the street and asking you to review their CV and help them get a job. You'd likely hesitate, right? The same principle applies online. Behind every screen is a person who doesn't know you, making it less likely for them to respond positively to a cold request.
Here are some things that I share with others when I'm helping them learn to network:
The Importance of Relationship Building
Build relationships first, then ask for favors. Think about it—if a friend reached out to you for help, you'd be more inclined to assist them because you already have an established relationship. Networking operates on the same principle. By cultivating meaningful connections, you increase your chances of receiving support and opportunities.
Engaging in Genuine Interactions
Initiate genuine interactions with others, whether online or in person. Engage with people in your field, join professional groups, and attend industry events. Take the time to get to know them, share insights, and offer assistance when you can. Over time, these relationships can lead to valuable opportunities and insights that can advance your career.
Embracing the Long-Term Relationships
When you feel discouraged, remember that it's not about immediate results—it's about building relationships that can support your professional growth in the long run.
Stay proactive, stay genuine, and watch how networking can open doors to new career opportunities.
