Beyond the Lab: Navigating My Next Steps After Academia

I loved my PhD but academia was not for me

While pursuing my PhD, I came to the realization that staying in academia wasn't for me. Despite my love for scientific stimulation and problem-solving, a crucial aspect was missing—connecting with other human beings through my work. Frankly, I had no idea about my post-PhD path, one that would allow me to embrace the part of me that loves connecting, inspiring, and helping others.

Finding my true purpose

The answer unfolded through various avenues. Working with an organization called PhD Careers Beyond Academia, I discovered my passion: helping fellow PhDs find their next steps and navigate the journey. Pouring my energy into this endeavor revealed a deeply fulfilling pursuit—the missing piece of the puzzle.

Simultaneously, my love for creativity beckoned. I enrolled in two entrepreneurship courses, and around the three-year mark of my PhD, it hit me: building my own business was a viable option.

During this pivotal time, I received invaluable advice—"Start building a network; you won't go anywhere without it." Taking these words to heart, I dove into networking. Fast forward, and here I am, co-founding Alma.me with Angela, aiming to facilitate a smoother transition for all of you.

Now, as the CEO of Alma.me, I get to embody various aspects of myself. Networking and relationship building, which I love and am naturally good at, form an integral part of my role. Additionally, I can unleash my creative side through content creation and innovative strategies to grow the business.

Tips for personal discovery

Discovering a place where you are happy and fulfilled begins by looking within. My best tip is as you navigate through your day, pay attention to tasks that make you flow and feel good. Reflect and jot down once a week:

1. What did I love/like doing?
2. What did I not like?
3. What do I miss, and what would I wish to have more in my life?

 By the end of your PhD you will have an idea of what you enjoy doing and what could be next for you.
