Embracing Your Worth Beyond Academia

diary of a phd Feb 09, 2024

In the realm of academia, it is engrained in us that hard word should be its own reward, and financial aspirations should take a back seat. This ethos, deeply etched into our academic DNA, can overshadow the recognition of our true value and the compensation that should go with it.

In my own journey out of academia, I've struggled to accept the true value of my knowledge, but I've started to shift my mindset. Beyond academia, knowledge isn't just appreciated, it's sought after, and I feel there's a promise of fair compensation.

The start of the academic journey may come with the acceptance of little pay, justified by the pursuit of education. But, as we advance through a PhD, the narrative should change. Compensation should reflect the years invested in education and a fair recognition of our expertise.

I grappled with this reality when faced with the prospect of postdoctoral research. After dedicating 15 years of my life to education, the idea of a salary that was almost equivalent to my days as a PhD-student felt unfair. Meanwhile, friends who went directly into the workforce were building homes, enjoying yearly vacations, and savoring life.

When I started my PhD, I envisioned a life different from the one unfolding before me. The guilt of wanting more than a small apartment, occasional vacations, and limited finances lingered. Dreams of being able to live a comfortable life with my family in my own house felt distant.

The academic establishment often made me feel guilty for wanting more. The thought of finances being a decisive, though not sole, reason created a lot of internal conflict. What academia had to offer didn't align with my life goals.

But in my journey, I've learned that the desire for greater financial reward is a valid reason for leaving. The decision to seek opportunities that value my time and grant autonomy over my path has been empowering. It's not just about monetary gains but about recognizing and honoring the worth of the dedication I poured into years of academic pursuit.

So, for those considering a transition, seeking out a future where your expertise is not just acknowledged but celebrated. The move is just one step towards professional fulfillment and a world ready to reward your knowledge in ways you may not have imagined, both financially and otherwise. And that's not a bad thing.
