Networking for Academics: Simple, Actionable Tips to Get You Started
Oct 25, 2024Networking can feel intimidating, especially for PhDs and postdocs used to the academic bubble. I get it—it’s hard to step out of your comfort zone, but it's essential for career growth, especially if you're thinking about a transition to industry. While it's normal to feel nervous, here’s the truth: most people are open to talking, and you’ll often find it easier than you expect once you start. It's all about putting yourself out there, and like with everything- the more often you do it the easier it gets ;)
Remember your first presentation of your data, wasn't that a bit scary too? And look at you now. Here are some actionable tips for you to implement immediately.
1. YOU ARE NOT ALONE
The majority of people feel nervous or even a bit anxious about networking. I would say I am an extrovert and I feel nervous too. What works for me really well is a mindset shift from 'People probably are not interested in me' assume instead the the best—that people are kind and willing to chat. This simple shift in mindset makes it easier to take the first step.
2. SET A STRATEGY
A strategy is not essential but having one will make networking more efficient and even easier. How you might wonder? If you set out to network with a specific group of people who align with your interest as you have defined career goals. Ask yourself what are my career goals Are you aiming for a specific industry or role? Use that as your compass to attend the right events and connect with relevant professionals. Attending events where people are with similar interested to you will make it much easier to find topics to talk about.
3. START AT UNIVERSITY EVENTS
Start at low-pressure places. Career fairs, alumni events, or industry panels you already share a common connections. This is a great place to go out and test networking. Remember the more often you do it the easier it gets. These environments are perfect to grow your confidence in your networking abilities.
4. RESEARCH & BE CURIOUS
Before events, read up on speakers or industries of interest. Use this knowledge to ask insightful questions. And when you're at the event, lead with curiosity—ask what brought people there or what they’re passionate about. If you see a group of people, just walk over and ask if you can join them. That often is enough to become part of a group and then just ask questions - everyone likes to talk about themselves.
5. FOLLOW UP & STAY CONNECTED
After a good chat, connect on LinkedIn (use the QR code feature for easy exchange). Send a simple message: "Thanks for the great chat! Looking forward to keeping in touch."
Trust me that with time, networking will feel more natural, and you’ll build connections that can support your career growth.
